About
Urban Species
The birth of
Urban Species was simple, yet counts for a lot to sum
up the company attitude. Being within our social circles
of designers, musicians, and artists, we began to realise
that there isnt a unique company which represents
our kind of people in an honest way, without being contrived
and only concerned with making a quick buck. We eventually
pooled our resources together, to make a company which
has a very unique and focused clothing style and attitude
which combine all the elements of urban music and art
into clothing.
We pride ourselves
on having ranges and clothing that NO ONE else has.
The clothing began with Urban Species very own range
of T-Shirts, Hoodys, Vests, and caps. The company has
now spawned so much more. Concentrating on exclusivity,
(thus being unique,) we not only stock independent,
exclusive brands from all over the world, we also give
independent designers in the UK a platform to sell and
promote their wear.
The
Marvel Connection
We always had
requests for garments to have Marvel Comics characters
painted on them, done in a fashionable way. This was
absolutely no surprise, as comics, (Marvel in particular,)
has always been attached to urban culture. While we
are pushing for the UK urban scene to be in the public
eye, we always pay homage, and respect where the roots
come from. The urban culture roots are from
New York.
The explosion
that occurred in the 60s and 70s, between
many creative arts, politics, and lifestyles, very much
affected New York. During this time, Stan Lee and co.
created a revolution in comic book culture. They created
a very real world, where heroes were insecure, had psychosis,
were monsters, they had moral ambiguities, and the writers
tackled current political issues, race wars, and drugs.
Most importantly, Stan Lee had set ALL of this, in a
very real, and a very current New York. They created
Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Hulk, Blade. Daredevil, The
Fantastic 4, The Punisher, the Black Panther, and many
more.
Urban Species
are official Marvel licensees, with an exclusive contract.
We develop one off official garment, designed for, and
sported by fan boys, fashionites, musicians, artists,
and various media moguls. We work on doing unique promotions,
tied with Marvel as they release movies. We are creating
various pieces of official Marvel art, for companies
associated with Marvel. We are in the process of selling
one off official Marvel pieces of art.
Marvel are
working with us, and giving weight behind our larger
projects.

Let
me get something off my chest before I go any further
"Organics
Suck".
Having
said that, I can say without hesitation that I support
the total success of the Sony Spider-Man franchise.
I say this because they have done their homework and
hired both a director ( Raimi) and lead actor (Tobey
Maguire) who continue to go to great lengths to capture
the essence of the comic book-The Amazing Spider-Man.
Reading the first volume of Amazing Spider-Man should
be a requirement for the job of director of this movie
franchise. I trust that Sony seeks out directors and
actors who have a true love of this character and
are as committed, if not more committed to the Spider-Man
character as Raimi and Maguire have been.
But, as a Spider-Man comic book collector, I propose
the following argument.
|
The
web shooters are an integral part of the character Spider-Man.
No other character in science fiction has such a device.
Gunfighters have six shooters, Swashbucklers have swords,
Star Wars Jedi Knights have Light Sabers, Star Trek Federation
members have phasers, Dick Tracy has the Two Way Wrist Radio,
but Spider-Man and only Spider-Man has a unique devise called
web shooters. They are a means of transportation as well
as defensive and offensive weaponry.
That
the movie would imitate everything about the web shooters
except the web shooters themselves is proof of the importance
of them. If Spider-Man has organic webbing why does he have
to press his two fingers into his palms?
The
character Peter Parker represents one of the first teenagers
to star in his own comic book. Prior to this, teenagers
were the side kicks for adult Super Heroes. At 16, Peter
Parker was Spider-Man, a boy/genius, whose greatest invention(
which he can never take public credit for) is the web shooters
and webbing. His genius, angst and altruism are part of
what makes his character so enduring. That Mr. Raimi would
state that he couldn't see Peter Parker creating something
that 3M couldn't make, is both insulting and confusing.
Val Kilmer's( Batman ) breakout movie was Real Genius.
In this movie, he and several other students, the principle
being a 16 year old character, created a Laser device similar
to the United States Star Wars program. Angelina Jolie played
in the movie Hackers, where she and several
High School students, had the intellectual capacity to hack
into Top Secret Industrial files. In the comedy Weird
Science, we have High School students developing
their own woman in the form of Kelly LeBroc. Mathew Broderick
in War Games showed how a High School student
could match wits with a Super computer. In the Philadelphia
Experiment we have a High School student played
by Christopher Collett, who developed a nuclear device with
stolen radioactive materials and Radio Shack parts. All
of these movies came out years after the Stan Lee/Steve
Ditko created character Peter Parker, 16 year old High School
Science whiz, was created. For all of the success of the
Spider-Man movies, (a success I support because it brings
people into the comic books ), the Spider-Man movie franchise
can never reach it's full potential until it presents the
complete Peter Parker/Spider-Man character. That character
can only be complete with web shooters and Peter Parker
created webbing.

UPDATE:
Of course as fate would have it,
billions of dollars in licensing and merchandising revenue
have trumped 44 years of comic book history-Spider-Man the
comic book character now has organic webbing. This comic
tells you

While not considered Volume 3

in One More Day, Peter is once again living with Aunt May,

Now,
if you don't have your own web site to rant on, you
can go to the web site that introduced me to cyber

is safe to say that some of the most knowledgeable
people on the planet Earth regarding the character
Spider-Man, who have Internet access, frequent the

You
name the comic book character who has or had a movie
coming out and the SuperHeroHype.com
will give you the 411.It will also allow you to engage
in some of the largest forums on the Internet for comic
book and comic book movie buffs. Starting with Spider-Man
Hype you can navigate your way throughout the SHH community.

graphically presented the entire world of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
Both
sites are truly encyclopedic in their presentations.

If you consider yourself a true Spidey geek,
then you can’t get any more thrills than going over
to The
Unabridged Spider-Man Appendix. You name
the villain, friend or supporting character in ANY Spider-Man
comic book, these fellows have found them cross referenced
and catalogued them. I give them two thumbs up for having
done their homework. They are major contributors to The Spider-Man
Encyclopedia and it too is a must have for any true Spider-Man
collector. Within this same web site, you can also go over
to The
Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe:
. Its name speaks for itself. You name the Marvel character
OTHER than Spider-Man or Wolverine and they've got the low
down on them.

Marvel Spider-Man Index
As
an OMMMS (Original member of the Merry Marvel Marching
Society) I am committed to spreading the word regarding
the wonderful world of Marvel comic books. As a young
man growing up in Brownsville,Brooklyn, New York,
it would have been very easy to go the way of the
villian and super villian. For many of the guys on
my block, the Marvel Super Hero represented a more
identifiable character than the DC Universe. It was
a cousin of mine named Juan Waiters, who introduced
me to the world of Marvel comics.Prior to him, I had
only read DC comics. His exact words to me were "
Brothers read Marvel!"It is the mission of this
web site to encourage Brothers, Sisters, Aunts and
Uncles , Moms and Dads of all faiths, colors and creeds
to use the Marvel universe as a method of encouraging
literacy.Literacy is an essential POWER that must
be encouraged to all people, especially our youth. There
is at least one Marvel Super Heroe that is age, sex, race
appropriate. For me, at he age11- of all of the Marvel
comics my cousin Juan introduced me to, I picked up
a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #18. The rest, as they
say, is history.
It
is stated in the Rock-It Comics biography of the legendary
guitarists Carlos Santana, that he learned how to
read English by reading Spider-Man comic books. This
process of literacy through reading Spider-Man and
other comics is one that I am both a supporter and
staunch advocate.When I graduated Elementary School,I
tested at a 10th grade reading level.Regardless of
America's military and economic strength, without
a literate population, we are a weak nation. Comic
books can and have been an excellent medium to attract
young people into the joys of reading. When you visit
the Marvel website you will be exposed to interviews,
up coming events in Marvel, The new Marvel Catalog
as well as cyber comics.
